A PARENT’S GUIDE to Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports (MTSS)
What is MTSS?
A Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS - previously known as RtI or Response to Intervention) integrates all students in a well-integrated system. It connects general, gifted, and special education with intervention and enrichment services through high-quality, standards-based instruction and intervention that is matched to students’ academic, social and behavioral needs. Needs are identified by monitoring students’ progress in the classroom and in common areas of the school (hallways, playground, lunchroom, etc). Adjustments to instruction and intervention supports are based on students’ performance and rate of success.
Key Principles of MTSS

Use a multi-tiered model of service delivery and match instruction to the learners’ needs

Use progress-monitoring data to change instruction within each tier

Use research-based interventions and instruction

Employ practices to ensure that interventions are implemented consistently and correctly

Document and encourage parental-involvement in all steps of the process
